Chronology
Life
Born in Hemamatsu Village, Otori District, Sakai Prefecture (present-day Kyowa-cho, Sakai-ku, Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture). He learned shogi while helping with the family business of making zori (sandals) soles. Around 1886 (Meiji 19), he became an apprentice at a footwear wholesaler in Nihonbashi and showed precocious talent, often defeating adults at shogi played on benches in the streets. However, it is said that he was fired for injuring a child he was looking after at his apprenticeship because he was too absorbed in shogi. After that, he returned home and helped with the family business, honing his skills in gambling shogi in his teens, and became famous in Osaka as an amateur shogi player.
